When the road crew ended their run, the caboose needed to be resupplied. Along the route food, ice, coal, kerosene, flags, flares and other items used by the team would need to be replaced. Typically this was done when the cabin car was spotted on the caboose track.
Kit #2, Caboose Services, has 5 buildings to help crews restock their home away from home, including: supply shed (with an outhouse attached), coal bin to replenish the stove, fuel tank stand for kerosene, ice house for the perishables, and a flag and lantern stand for the signals and marker lights. The local freight house was the financial backbone for any successful railroad. Local companies shipped and received goods from just about anywhere in the country, and the freight dock is where it all happened. L.C.L. business was an integral part of any town and the shipping office was a beehive of activity.
Kit #3, Pete's Freight Dock, is a great example of this type of local freight house. With its small and flexible footprint, it will fit on any short spur and includes 3 structures (office, dock, storage) and dozens of quality metal details. Click here to view Kit #3 - now for sale.
